Did you have a faith in the Four Rivers Restoration Project?
Riverside residents including me all know that the Four Rivers Restoration Project prevents floods. It is obvious that the water level is brought down when the riverbed is dredged.
How could you be so sure?
There were many farmers who cultivated in the waterfront area of Naju. The riverside farmland has been replaced now with the leisurely place, but still there is much agricultural land near the area. Year’s agricultural outcome is dependent on the annual precipitation rate, or the water level. Residents here are very sensitive even to several centimeters change in flood stage.
How much was the water level declined?
It was lessened by more than 1.5 meters. Although this year’s precipitation rate in YeongSan River was less than the other regions, it could have been dangerous if it were as before. This year, there was no danger from flood warning.
There still are some people against the Four Rivers Restoration Project. What is your opinion on that?
You can never know where the lightening would hit, but inundation visits the same area repeatedly. To be preventive of it, we have the Four Rivers Restoration Project. Why are we excavating the riverbed? What is this project for? It is to have our way out of natural disaster. People against this project without any alternatives are like the people impeding fire fighters in times of conflagration.
