Was there any damage done in ChangYeong District during this rainy season?
There was some, but it was not from the NakDong River Project. Compared it to the past, the damage has actually been lessened.
This constant heavy rainfalls may have frightened you.
In the past, there were three-month periods of rainfalls and seven-month periods of drought. It rained a lot this year as well. But the usual largescale water damage was not seen in this year. Water might have submerged all its way over the fields without dykes or Watergates. This summer, some crops have sunk under water so that public officials came out to water-pump overnight, but it was fortunate that there was no damage.
What types of damage were there with rainfalls like this before?
NakDong River used to suffer even only with two days of rain spoiling oriental melon patches and rice paddies. If it were before the Four Rivers Restoration Project, oriental melon patches and watermelon patches might have been floating all over the place. I believe that the excavation may have prevented NakDong River’s overflow.
What is your opinion on collapse of Waekwan railroad bridge?
Some people say that the damage was caused by the excavation on the riverbed, but we are not sure of it. It sounds somewhat convincing for what they say; however, I do not believe the excavation was the reason since its pillar broke with a snap.
