The most eye-catching feature of the Gumi Weir is the winch in the shape of a tortoise. Gumi Weir is 374.3m long with a 103.5m movable weir and a 270.8m fixed weir, and an observatory deck is installed at the central winch. This observatory deck provides 360-degree view of the Nakdong River. For spectators’ convenience, an elevator leading to the observatory deck was also installed. In the side of the weir, the small hydroelectric power plant with an annual production of 14,700,000kwh is built to generate environmental-friendly energy resources, and the weir bridge is usually used as a trail for jogging and bike riding. A fishway created near the Gumi Weir was the hybrid type of a tiered and an Ice Harbor fishway, considering characteristics of various fish species from the field investigation, and it allows various species to move freely.
Around the Gumi Weir, there are many sandbars, well-reserved wetlands, and Haepyeong Field. The ecology of Haepyeong Field is preserved as a habitat for hooded cranes with upland rice planted for their food while a Miscanthus sinensis habitat, a reed habitat, a rape flower field, and natural wetlands are created surrounding the Gumi Weir. In the official opening of the Gumi Weir on October 15, many events including performances of the municipal choir and of samulnori, or the traditional percussion quartet, and a walking contest on Dulle Road will be held. Not only that, the area near the Gumi Weir will provide various experience programs such as the Cultural Festival for Low-carbon Green Growth and Nature Love.
