Eight Views of the Han River

Among the Eight Views of the Han River, Dumulmeori will be specialized as a place you can admire the scenery of sunset, while the Ipo Weir as beautiful scenery of grassland, the Yeoju Weiras ditch reeds habitat and the Gangchon Weir will be specialized with loyal robe luggers on the river. Especially the habitat of 'Danyang Ssukbujaengi (Aster Yomena)' provides opportunity of observing how endangered species are protected for re-proliferation. (The term of Eight Views, in Korean, Chinese and Japanese, traditionally means the most beautiful scenes of a certain area)

The Eight Views of the Han River will be reborn as ecological park with scent of surrounding natural, historical and cultural characteristics. The 1stview is the Dumulmeori District of Yangpyeong County which shows off breathtaking sunset view on the junction of the two rivers, Namhan River and Bukhan River. The 2ndview is Gyopyeong District of Yangpyeong County famous for flame grass habitat. The 3rd view is the Ipo Weir, the landmark of as a masterpiece among waterfront structures in Four Rivers. And the 4thview is Cheonnam and Gasan District which is well know to ditch reeds habitats and then the 5thviewis the Yeonyang District in Yeoju County which royal robe ruggers make scenic harmony with waves of the Han River. The unusual thing is that the Danyang Ssukbujaengi (classified as endangered species) habitats in Yeoju is designated as the 6thview. Continuously passing by the 7thview of the Neungamli Isle of Chungju, when you reach to the Tanngeumdae where it makes feeling that the rhyme of Ureuk (the master of music in Gaya) flows around the magnificent view of bizarre cliffs, the Eight Views are to be completed. Riparian ecological area of the Han River which are planned to be developed in earnest phase of work from incoming October will be equipped bike paths, rest area and observatory deck.

The 1st view
Dumulmeori (literary meaning is two [du] - water [mul]- head [meori], that is, 'the junction where two streams meet together') is the spot where two rivers meet together; one is the Namhan River(southern Han River) started from Geomryongso Pond, Geumdaebong Peak, Gangwon Province; and the other is the Bukhan River (northern Han River) having its source in the Geumgang Mountains. Here stands a 400-year-old zelkova tree.

The 3rd view
Yeongleung, the royal mausoleum of King Sejong located in Wangdae-ri, Neungseo-myeon, Yeoju-gun, Gyeonggi-do. This royal monument is for the King Sejong who invented and proclaimed Korean Alphabet 'Hangeul' for entire people's enlightment from illiteracy in 15 century.

The 5th view
Tourists are on board to go sightseeing on the royal robe lugger cruising on the Namhan River flowing in front of Sinreuk Temple, Yeoju-eup, Yeoju-gun, Gyeonggi-do. Lugger ship was important transportation to carry the best Yeoju rice of this region to the Palace for the king in that time with bad transportation era.

The 6th view
Habitat of Danyang Ssukbujaengi in the Samhapni Isle, Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do. Danyang Ssukbujaengi is classified as endangered species by the authority so that their habitat is lined for protection.

The 8th view
Tanngeumdae has the monument stone for General SHIN Rip (a general of Joseon Dynasty). General Shin rendered distinguished contribution by defeating the enemy across the Yalu River to the north. Later, during Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, General Shin fought against the rushing Japanese Troops with his back to the wall but his men were defeated to perish.
