Restoration the Inland Waterways of the Yeongsan River, Improvement of Water Quality

The Yeongsan River owns diverse historic and cultural assets alongits long waterway, but its quality is level 5, with bad smell and dark color. Its pollution is so bad that it cannot be used for even agricultural use. The solution for the problem is the Seungchon weir. The government will solve both improvement of water quality and restoration of ecology by building Seungchon weir.

The weir, which will be completed by 2012, is 540m long and 6m high, of which 360m is fixed and 180m is operational. The elevator gates are 30m and 50m long.

Built under Hanyang Co. Ltd's construction, through the weir, watercourse will be restored, such as 'transportation and culture, ''58-ri of a waterside village', 'inland port of Yeongsan' and 'ferry'.

Method of improving water quality in Seungchon weir is also noteworthy. In the weir, lower-water restrictive facility, which forcibly makes the lower part of water to flow, is installed to let the upper stream's soil to slip away easily, and water circulation system using sun-light is equipped. Total of 19.7km section including the section from Chipyeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju to Singa-ri,Geumcheon-myeon, Naju City, 13.2km (the Yeongsan River), and second from Yugye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju to Seonam-dong, 6.5km (the Hwangryong River) will be dredged of 8.1 million m3 accumulation to clear the waterway.
