Gongju Weir - "A wingbeat of phoenix symbolizing King Muryeong of Baekje Kingdom."
Phoenix which had stood for King Muryeong, the zenith of Baekje culture, gave form to the Gongju Weir. With motive of phoenix’s big wingbeat for renaissance of Baekje culture, the shape of phoenix’s head and cintamani were embodied in the winch chamber. And utilizing the sculpture of the public bridge and falling waterfall, we gave body to wings and tail of phoenix. Movable part of the weir stretches 280m and static part does 60m, so total length of the weir is 280m. For maximizing the effect of level control, the movable part of the weir consists of the combination of main floodgates and adjusting floodgates. Workers in the construction site of the weir also paid attention to send fishes which might be stuck inside the cofferdam. The surrounding riparian area was focused on adjusting to the optimization of historic and cultural assets of Baekje Kingdom. In case of Ssangsin district, it has plaza affiliated with the Yeonmi Mountain and ecological observatory garden. Additionally, ecostream and wild flowers garden are to be created. In the Sinngwan district which formed for urban residents feast and recreation, sports facilities have been already installed for current active use by citizens. The Ungjin district, the closest area to the Gongju Weir, has a plan of restoring the wild forest which has kept legend about bear.
