Korea’s Successful Bid for 2015 7th World Water Forum

With the Four Rivers Restoration Project, Korea won a bid to hold World Water Forum which attracts much attention around the world, being called as ‘Water Olympic.’ The Ministry Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs announced that the venue for 7th World Water Forum (2015) has been finalized to Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk- do in South Korea by the board of directors from World Water Council No. 43 held in Rome, Italy on November 15. In order to attract the 7th World Water Forum, five countries, South Korea, England, Scotland, UAE, and South Africa competed and Scotland lost its bid for the position to South Korea in the final round.

The World Water Forum that will be held for a week around the day of Water, March 22 is the event held every three years by the World Water Council (WWC). As the biggest international water-related event, approximately 30,000 people including key personnel from international organizations, officials from various nations, private sector, NGO, and water experts participate in.

Through the event, experts discuss on a variety of water-related issues around the world and substantially draw national actions plans to solve water problems. Along with the forum, a competition with advanced technology on water management or ‘Water EXPO’ will also be held.

In order to host this forum, the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs, Korea Water Forum, Korea Water Resources Corporation, and Korea Water Resources Association have been actively involved in various activities as institution members of the World Water Council since 2000, and how it was well-prepared for the local inspection of the World Water Council along with informative presentation was known to be worked as a positive reinforcement. The Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs assessed that Korea was selected as the venue for this competition for Korea has been making aggressive efforts for water management meanwhile being internationally known as a place of poor water-related conditions.

The Ministry expects that hosting the World Water Forum may bring economic benefits in about KWR 2000 billion and create employment for 1,900 people. The experts predict that the current world market for water will increase by average of 4.96% every year from USD 419 billion in 2010 to USD 865 billion in 2025.
