From November 19 to 25, International Conference for Water Resources and Environment (ICWRE) was held in Moroco Marrakech. Geneva Institute for Water Environment Health (GIWEH) invited relevant international organizations such as the UNEP and the international experts to this meeting, in which the Office of National River Restoration attended on behalf of Korea. Nidal SALIM, the Director of GIWEH organized the place to discuss global water solutions and the best practices around the country in related dimensions and to introduce the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project as a good example. The officer delegations including Jae Sun Park, the team leader, Seung Kyun Kim, International Public Relations Specialist, and Cheol Gi Kim, a deputy director carried out the busy schedule giving the keynote presentation, case study of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project presentation, and holding special events.
In the keynote presentation held on November 21 attended more than 200 people who were the Arab state officials, water experts, members of the relevant international organizations such as UNEP, UNITAR, WIPO, and NGO. The delegation gave a briefing on the background and the progress of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project, presented effectiveness of the project which was proved by reducing damage during the monsoon season this summer, and explained the future plans of the business as a model for green growth.
On November 22, the presentation on ‘Korea’s Water and Green Growth, Practices and Performance of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project’ was organized by the Office of National River Restoration and Geneva Institute for Water Environment Health.
Arranged as a special meeting, 60 people attended and showed interest. On the spot, the delegation presented the practices of green growth by the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project and its post-impacts and discussed on the measures that can be applied to water-stressed Arab states.
The meeting has a substantial significance that the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project drew attention in a water-related international conference and it was discussed as the main point. It entrenched Korea’s position as the best practice for green growth against climate change. In addition, many Arab countries including Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Pakistan, and Egypt asked specific questions of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project and showed interest with requests of related materials wishing to introduce it to their countries and to share experience of the project.
