On November 10, the opening ceremony of the Chilgok Weir was held at the riverside of the Nakdong River, Gwango-ri, Yakmok-myeon, Chilgok-gun of Gyeongsangbok-do. During the performances prior to the main event, the unveiling ceremony of memorial sculptures and leisure demonstrations of wakeboarding and water skiing caught the attention of the participants.

The fusion performances of the electric-string team and Korean classical music, Gukak ensemble presented the beauty blended of tradition and modernity as if symbolizing the Chilgok Weir that was designed by modern interpretation of ‘the legend of Cheolwoo.‘ The following official events were promotional video screenings and the opening ceremony of the Chilgok Weir in the Nakdong River.

People who were involved in the event expressed their anticipation of the fact that completion of the weir will not only prevent floods but only supply enough water in drought seasons. The Chilgok Weir was designed after a theme of the legend, in which Cheolwoo was said to be buried to reign on aura of the earth following ‘Dochamsasang – luck and misfortune philosophy’ in the Silla Dynasty.

It is the third largest multi-purpose weir after the Haman Weir and the Kangjeong Weir in the Nakdong River in total length of 400m and a height of 14.8m with the water storage capacity of 93.6 million tons. Annually it generates 15.28 million kWh of electricity, which is the enough to cover for 3000 people to use for a year. It is expected to substitute crude oil import and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, various sports facilities including that for the water sports and auto camping sites are located near the water front district. Waterfront ecofriendly space is expected to become a new tourist attraction in conjunction with the nearby Waegwan War Memorial Museum and Chilgok Pyeongwha Park.
