Parents in rural hometown get sleepless in rainy season (called as 'Jangma' in Korean) out of anxiety of inundation to farmlands.On the contrary, in dry season, they start to fret as severe drought makes rice paddy parched and cracked. Now the weirs would relieve their worries like that.The weirs, smart worker, will function to release the water before it goes into inundation andon the other hands it will discharge restored waters in drought.
Our rivers tend to inundate into the surrounding lands even from little amount of rainfall because of elevated river bed out of sediments accumulated for a long time. Due to this, we have witnessed annually recurrent damages in astronomical amounts. During the past 10 years from 1997 to 2006, the estimated property damages out of flood in Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk Provinces, Daegu and Busan metropolitan areas were KRW 6.8 trillion, and we had to pour KRW 10.9 trillion for its recovery. On the contrary, during the dry season,it is hard to find water on the river bed revealing its white dried soils.In order to approach to more fundamental resolution for annually repeated flood and drought damages, it is under active progress that making water vessel out of dredge and weirs constructions. The effectiveness of dredging sediments and weirs constructions for water level control were already proved in torrential down pour in July and August. That is, flood elevation went down that much.
