Restoring the rivers’ natural ecosystems

Some critics argue that the proposed artificial development of the rivers will disturb the natural ecosystem already in place. However, the four rivers are not currently in a healthy condition, a condition that will only worsen if not addressed immediately.

For many centuries, Koreans have settled by rivers and benefited from them in numerous ways. However, with the coming of technology and development, increased water use has led to water shortage, blocking the ordinary waterways of the rivers. Industrialization and urbanization have caused water pollution, incapacitating the normal functions of the nation’s rivers.

Low water levels and contaminated water are a threat to all living organisms, plants and humans. The Four Rivers Restoration Project is designed to secure clean and abundant water to ensure the future of life along the river.
