The Four Rivers Restoration Project is not just about addressing the current water shortage. Rather, officials are aiming to reduce the effects of natural disasters and cultivate a stable river environment that can be sustained long into the future.
Changes in rainfall patterns due to climate change continue to take extreme forms, such as torrents and extreme droughts. In Korea, the chances of localized torrential downpours are expected to increase, causing more precipitation during the rainy season, while the lengths of droughts are expected to last longer and/or increase in severity. This points to more frequent damages due to floods and droughts.
In this regard, securing sufficient water resources at present will be the key to guaranteeing a stable water supply and ecological substantiality of the rivers for future generations. In this sense, the Four Rivers Project is a great initiative crucial to the quality of life of the nation’s residents.
