The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs will restore small rivers to prevent floods and recover ecosystem. To this end, it will set up a small river restoration plan that includes the recovery of major river functions such as flood control, irrigation, environment and culture, etc. by the end of this year and will put it in place from 2011.
The project is aimed at preventing flood damages, securing water and improving water quality and it is expected not only to boost local economies but to improve residents' amenity and national status.
The government will start the project in 15 local rivers first and extend it into 230 rivers after coming up with an investment plan with the total budget of about 612 billion won.
