Meteorological Administration to introduce total precipitation forecast on river basin
New method, which would calculate average precipitation by fluvial regions in every hour and automatically suggest incoming 48-hour forecast data, is scheduled to be introduced. The Meteorological Administration gave the entire picture about the plan. According to that, the authority would establish precipitation forecasting system in 26 sectors nationally with applying regionally gathered data. It is said that it will start test operation from late August. This digital forecast system is to service temperature, wind, atmospheric condition, rainfall probability, precipitation amount, amount of snowfall, form of rain and height of wave, within 2 days in every 3 hour. The trial service which Meteorological Administration introduced is going to divide nation in 26 sectors to provide real-time transmission of hourly atmospheric condition of rainfall and average precipitation with incoming 48-hour forecast data. Pin-point forecast service is available at present. Average precipitation by regions means the average rainfall in the total river basin of particular fluvial area and is able to be converted in tonnage. When the concept of Rainfall DAD (depth-area-duration) is applied, we would aware that how much the precipitation of millimeter per hour in specific area. Furthermore, we also could have information of overall amount of influx increase in the Han River for instance. At first, Meteorological Administration is to provide these data and information to the competent authorities like K-Water, Flood Control Office, Korea Hydro-Power Corporation, Korea Rural Corporation and local governments.
