On March 1, South Korean officials had round table conference with Deltares. Deltares is a leading Dutch-based research institute and special consultancy for matters relating to water, soil and subsurface. Its research includes flood pattern, rising sea level and embankment collapse. In the conference, representatives from water-related institutes, market parties and experts, all 17 attendants took part in to discuss future cooperation and technical exchange on climate change. Korean delegation saw potentials that the Water Board System, the advanced water management system of Holland, could be a role model for them to keep stable and healthy maintenance of four major rivers. So, they plan to invite the chairperson of the Dutch institute on an international forum on Four Major Rivers Restoration Project on coming October for further detailed discussion.
Water Board was voluntary organization of Dutch farmers for waterways management. Later it came to be under governmental organizational formation to take a role of managing water in both quality and quantity as well as tax collection.
The team visited the site of ‘Dike Relocation’, the fairly typical example of Room-for-the-River Project. It is the project which set back existing embankment backward 400 meters and lowered flood level 34 centimeter to cope with a flood of once-in-1250 year frequency. It surely was noteworthy for waterfront area development after ongoing Korean river project.
