The Soyang Stream (Soyangcheon), an urban stream flows into Yeoju County, is to reborn as ‘Aquatic Circulation Eco Stream’ connected with the Yeoju Weir. This stream is a small-sized one (7.8 km, Yeonra-ri to Ha-ri) that starts from Bukseong Mountain and flows with the Namhan River after penetrating the heart of the town. Yeoju County unfolded plan that creates desirable waterfront infrastructure (waterways, bike paths, aquatic recreation area, ecosystem observatory terrace, fountains and more) with KRW 15 billion budget support from central government. The Soyang Stream flows onto also ‘new town development destination’ of Yeoju Station (Seongnam-Yeoju Double Track Subway). Therefore sectors inclined to inundation will be reinforced on raising the embankment and surrounding areas are to be remodeled as environment friendly waterfront area. This project provides aquatic creatures and fishes with ‘vegetation room’ below the river so that electronically controlled movable weir could retain water inside during dry season and release water when flood comes. This project is to break ground in early next year and to complete 2013. The Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs will set up concrete plan on waterfront area until July and announce optimal location in December 2011.
