Gangcheon Weir Construction Site - Sharp questions relating the environments and dredging

There were many questions from the Polish ambassador Krzysztof Ignacy Majka. He asked, “Was the environment negatively affected by dredging 400million tons, and what kind of efforts were put to protect ecosystems”, He also wondered which technical skills have been used to prevent environmental issues occurred in the process of such a large-scale project in a short period of time.


Minister Shim answered, “Eco-friendly construction such as suction dredging method was used and 16 fish ways were installed to minimize the damage”, and the ambassador Majka nodded.

Ambassador Dubuisson from Belgium mentioned about the Chinese dam project which had caused environmental problems.

He has asked precise questions like how this project could be ecofriendly for the environment can have unexpected outcomes even if it has innovative ideas and skills. Malaysian ambassador Ibrahim said, “This project is beneficial for preventing flood damages and securing water resources.” At the same time, he wondered what other long-term benefits that could be derived from this project.

Minister Shim answered “The improvement in water quality issues will promote more tourism, stimulating economy of local communities.”
