Accomplishments from the Four Rivers Restoration Project, the Words Spread to the World

On August 23, CHA Yoon-Jeong, the Environment Administrator from the Office of National River Restoration has participated to an event ‘Stockholm World Water Week’ in Sweden and publicized the accomplishments from the Four Rivers Restoration Project. At this event, World Water Council (WWC), International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), policy makers of UN, scholars and experts were present.

Administrator Cha described a triumph of the Four Rivers Restoration Project during Water and Green Growth session that it has significantly prevented flooding thanks to all the dredging work done to major rivers. Continually, management of water source in response to the major concept of Water and Green Growth, or climate change was discussed followed by topics regarding stable supply of clean water, and waterfront-area development for betterment of citizen’s life quality. Administrator Cha also presented pacesetting cases of “Water and Green Growth” by encouraging water industry and associating it to the Four Rivers Restoration Project. UN Water Coordinator, Josefina Unturbe PhD has stated, “The Four Rivers Restoration Project is a pioneering case of Water and Green Growth, which is so important that I would like to introduce it to the community of nations.” She also added, “This October, I would like to officially invite Korea to Water for Life International Conference of UN in Zaragoza, Spain to share the experience of the Four Rivers Restoration Project.”

On the other hand, Administrator Cha held a seminar for the Four Rivers Restoration Project in an event of the Federation of Korean Associations, Middle Western USA in Chicago on August 20, while making her way to Stockholm. At this event in presence of representatives of thirty States Korean Associations, Administrator Cha delivered the news that effectiveness of the Four Rivers Project has been proven from the most recent severe rain storm in Korea and most of the work is expected to be completed by the end of this year. In addition, Administrator Cha stated, “Flood-preventing effect was huge from dredging in major rivers. Next spring, when water quality improvement on fresh water is assessed, we will make it clear of the success of the Four Rivers Restoration Project.”

Representatives of Korean Associations have understood that their homeland, Korea has become more resilient to natural disasters as a water management advanced country that they are willing to support if there is anything the society of Korean Associations could give a hand.
