Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Creates the Ecology Map of the Four Major Rivers

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs developed an ecological map that indicates flora and fauna information and a travel map of 45 tourist destinations around the four major rivers.

The ecological map shows not only plant and animal information but the location of nature parks, rivers, wetland conservation zones and weirs, etc. Especially, plant and animal information is based on the stream and river ecological health assessment done by the Ministry of Environment in 2008 and the national survey on the natural environment, increasing the credibility of the information. Satellite images of 2006 and 2007 are also put on the map for a better visual recognition.

In addition, it indicates each river's ecological grade and the areas that should be protected, which will be valuable information in coming up with river policies.

The travel map has information on habitats for migratory birds, movable weirs, ecological maps and wetlands as well as required travel time. It provides travel courses for families 1) by theme such as wild plants, fishes and migratory birds observation; 2) by transport method and 3) by travel hour so that families can select the travel course using the map.

The Office for the Four Major Rivers Restoration will launch its map service from February 23 both on the Internet (www.4rivers.go.kr) and in the form of books. From February 22, the map can be downloaded for free and the map books will be available in local libraries and regional territorial management offices.
