Four Major Rivers will have Eco-Friendly Weirs

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says that it will readjust rivers and make small streams around 14 movable weirs of the four major rivers to help fishes move freely. The fishways are inclined gently and will also have small shallows and swamps around them to improve water flow.

Also, sluice gates will be designed to be able to remove sediment easily in flood times. Vertical lift, rotary or turnover type sluice gates will be constructed considering characteristics of each individual weir.

Under the water, water circulators will be installed in Yeoju, Kangcheon, Chilgok and Seungchon Weirs and run by PV or electricity and a cleaning ship equipped with a water current generator will be operated at least once a week for Dalsung Weir to improve water circulation.

Haman Weir’s fishways will have glass windows on the wall that enable visitors to observe moving fishes. They will see through remote-cameras so that they can feel as if they are in the water.

On the rooftop of Nakdan Weir’s Integrated Management System, trees will be planted to make the top a green area.

At the Buyeo Weir, ecological parks will be created with different themes by season such as Rape Flower Field for Spring, Beach for Summer, Common Reed Community for Autumn and Migrating Birds for Winter.

In addition, various wetlands will be created around weirs with the names of Waterfowl Wetland for Chilgok Weir, Hooded Crane Wetland for Dalsung Weir and Alluvial Island for Haman Weir.

The construction of such weirs is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
