As the Landmark in Daegu, Dalseong Weir Rises

The Nakdong River’s opening event as celebration for the new waves was held in great success attended by 15,000 people including Sim Myeong-Pil, the administer of the river restoration office, officials, and local residents at around Dalseong weir in Nongong-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu from 2pm to 6pm. Followed by the pre-events including eco-path tracking and the Nakdong River bike exploration competition, the ceremony held at Chunnyeun Starlight Plaza was started with Pumbaa performances and continued with kite flying events at the Fishway Park and water leisure sports demonstrations.

Along side of the venue, open marketplaces for regional specialties were placed to add excitements and the photo exhibitions of beautiful environment and were simultaneously opened at the Millennia Starlight Plaza. In the cafeteria on the second floor of the Integrated Management Center, or the promotion center, the Four Major Rivers New Wave photo exhibition and Dalseong Narae photo exhibition were held to present changed looks of the Nakdong River. The Dalseong Weir which connects Hari of Nongong-eup, Dalseonggun of Daegu and Inan-ri of Gyeongsangbuk-do is 9.5 meters tall and 580 meters long in total length with a 162 meter fixed weir and a 418 meter movable weir visualized a cruise that sails the river. The weir is equipped with a unique rotary floodgate which is completely lifted up at normal times letting water flow above the gate, which is laid flat on its side at floods discharging water at its full speed, and which is lifted up a little to discharge sediments at sediment accumulation.

Three small hydro electricity plants of the 947kW class installed on toward the right side of the weir can supply 1500kWh of electricity per year, which is enough for the nearby 1,400 households. In addition, 17km and 28km long bike paths were respectively created for the dyke and the eco-district, and the water storage capacity for the weir is secured up to 56million tons being significantly effective on the flood prevention from heavy rains.

The construction for the ecological river is about to be finished in completion with observation center, otters wetlands, ecological tour facilities, reeds field, and purification facilities.
