Although dredged sector was the most among the Four Rivers, the Nakdong River definitely seemed to avoid severe inundation damage. It resulted from lowered riverbed up to 2.4m thanks to dredging and heightened stability up to 200-year rainfall. In 2003 with the Typhoon Maemi, many houses and farmlands were flooded as an embankment in the Nakdong (near Yedun-ri and Junggyo-ri, Euiryeong County, Gyeongnam Province) collapsed. Similar cases were reported from near Changnyeong County (Bugok-myeon and Muan-myeon with 10m-dyke collapse). In Daedae-ri, Yueo-myeon, Changnyeong County, river water flowed over bank to inundate the farmland and village. However, this year there was no news like that. Dojin-ri (Ugok-myeon, Goryeong County) has a memory of inundation in 2003 because of collapsed dyke to 70 meters, but it showed off safeties this year. Dalseong County of Gyeongbuk Province had a property loss out of inundation (Seongha-ri, Yuga-myeon) and dyke collapse (Seongsan-ri, Hwawon-eup) in the past years, but not a little damage report in this year.
There was much difference from past years in the fact that many inundation-prone areas give us good news this year’s summer. The Hwawon Amusement Park of Dalseong County in Daegu had been one of places suffered from inundation in every rainy season. However, it was not inundated this summer despite record-breaking downpours. Its vulnerable physiographic feature of being located in lowland between mainstream of the Nakdong and embankment had defined it as frequent inundation place. July 18, 2006, when sun shined the place after downpour, the parking lot had already turned into a pool. The precipitation of the day was 277 mm in Dalseong and 244 mm in Yeongcheon. Back again to this year, July 12, 2011, after rain clouds have gone away, the same parking lot was intact and clear, although the amount of rain was even slightly much more than that of 2006. In July of 2007, a rural village named Ogok (Oesan-ri, Buk-myeon, Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province) was flooded with environs rice paddies. The precipitation was 134 mm in Changwon-Masan, 203 mm in Jinju and 169 mm in Hapcheon. When we paid a visit the same village after completion of dredging work this July, we could find it safe from any inundation damage despite the rain amount was considerable amount (187 mm in Changwon; Jinju 212 mm; Hapcheon 204 mm). And the esplanade near Gumi Bridge in the upper stream of the Nakdong (Gumi City, Gyeongbuk Province) was not waterlogged because the level difference between riverbed and esplanade has increased to 4~6 meter from 2~3 meter.
